Lake County is about to become a lot more walkable. This week, officials in Groveland and Mount Dora moved forward with plans to add more than 13 miles of multi-use trails, a move aimed at reducing traffic congestion and connecting communities.
The Wekiva Trail Extension
Mount Dora’s City Council voted unanimously to partner with Tavares, Lake County, and the Trust for Public Land. Together, they are chasing a $25 million federal grant to extend the Wekiva Trail.
-
The Vision: An 11.5-mile extension following existing railroad tracks.
-
The Route: Stretching from the scenic Wooton Park in Tavares all the way to Sorrento (ending at County Road 437).
-
The Goal: To create a seamless, non-motorized corridor for commuters and weekend explorers alike.
Groveland’s Growing Network
While Mount Dora looks east, Groveland is continuing its push to become a premier “trail town,” adding to the regional network that makes Lake County a destination for outdoor enthusiasts. These expansions are designed not just for recreation, but as a legitimate alternative for residents looking to bypass local traffic.
